DANSE MACABRE:
The Dance of the Dead

Part Three of Three
By Two Star Symphony, FrenetiCore,
and Bobbindoctrin Puppet Theatre

March 17 - 25 at Talento Bilingue
333 S. Jensen Dr. Houston, TX 77003-1115

Two of Houston's coolest art clubs, Bobbindoctrin Puppet Theatre and Two Star Symphony join forces again for the final installment of their three-part Danse Macabre series. With music by Two Star Symphony and text by Bobbindoctrin's Joel Orr, The Dance of the Dead takes us on a journey beyond death as ode to the Camille Saint-Saens symphonic poem Danse Macabre, the original inspiration for the three collaborations. With Two Star Symphony setting the mood with their chilling original scores, Bobbindoctrin leads us through a graveyard where a man has been buried alive on the fateful night when the dead rise to dance out the tragic motions of their living selves. Roaming grave to grave, we become acquainted with the dead and their last memories, building towards the climactic Saint-Saens piece Danse Macabre, with a new arrangement by Margaret Lejuene and choreography by FrenetiCore’s Rebekah French featuring their dancers.

The expanded, now eight member Two Star Orchestra returns for this work, with Margaret Lejeune on cello and harp, Jo Bird on toy piano and viola, Debra Brown and Chenoa Mauthner on violin, John Duboise on clarinet, Kirk Suddreath on percussion, Chris Bakos on standup bass, and Cathy Power on Marimba. Five new original scores have been written specifically for this production, more music than in either previous installment.

Bobbindoctrin company members are utilizing many of their renowned puppet techniques for this production. Artistic Director Joel Orr has written his usual dark and funny text to go with the mesmerizing Two Star Symphony scores. Associate Technical Director Aaron Jackson has designed a sweeping graveyard encompassing the wide Talento Bilingue stage. All-new tabletop and rod puppets have been designed and built by Joel Orr and Aaron Jackson. BPT company member Atton Paul returns with his amazing pixelvision videography, introducing new techniques of stop motion animation through a pixelvision camera. Second unit videography is by BPT A/V Tech guru Christopher Daniello. Puppets and masks are designed by new BPT company member Justin Dunsford, designer of the DMII puppets. Newly relocated Austin artist Francesca Marquis has designed and operates her unique style of shadow puppetry. The cast of actors is led by Melissa Winter and Walt Zipprian and features Joel Orr.

While the Danse Macabre installments are thematically related, they are independent in plot and structure. There is no need to have seen Danse Macabre Part I: The Constant Companion or Danse Macabre Part II: The Consummate Host to enjoy the last installment.
