The story unfolds on an estate that has fallen to financial ruin. Most
of the family and staff have fled, and only three butlers remain to serve the ill and despotic master. Master Butler Beaumont tends to the master's needs by passing tasks along to Assistant Master Butler
Athelstan, who in turn serves his master by passing the tasks along to the Assistant to the Assistant Master Butler Mason. As the surrounding peasant population begins launching small attacks on the estate in retribution for its mounting debts, the butlers scurry about tending to the daily chores of the household, unaware of the encroaching doom.

The Crime of the Assistant Master Butler marks Bobbindoctrin's first and last foray into the rather gimmicky genre of the murder mystery. This is a whodunit that tells you in its title who did it, and so the mystery lurks elsewhere. Murder is but one of an infinite constellation of transgressions, and the crime of Assistant Master Butler Athelstan, in contrast, makes murder almost seem like a wonderful gift. With this play, Bobbindoctrin company members hope to kill off the genre once and for all, thereby freeing theatres all over the world to get back to the business of producing genuine plays.
